What is WeChat?

WeChat is a multi-purpose messaging, social media, and mobile payment app developed by the Chinese company Tencent. It was first released in 2011 and has since become one of the largest standalone messaging apps in the world. WeChat allows users to send text and voice messages, make voice and video calls, share photos, videos, and moments (similar to posts on other social media platforms), and follow official accounts of businesses and celebrities.

One of the key features of WeChat is its mobile payment system, WeChat Pay, which enables users to make transactions both online and in physical stores, transfer money to other users, pay bills, and more.

WeChat has grown to become an integral part of daily life for many people in China and is increasingly used by people around the world, although its popularity outside of China is not as widespread due to competition from other messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messenger.
