At the beginning of Twitter, how many characters could you use in a single tweet?

At the very beginning of Twitter when it was launched in March 2006, users were allowed a maximum of 140 characters in a single tweet. This character limit remained unchanged for several years until it was expanded to 280 characters in November 2017.
