On Thursday, February 17, Jonathan Haidt and Robby Soave engaged in an Oxford-style debate on the role of government in regulating social media, addressing a full house at the Sheen Center in downtown Manhattan. The debate was part of the Soho Forum's monthly series, organized by Reason, with Soho Forum Director Gene Epstein serving as moderator.

Jonathan Haidt, a professor of ethical leadership at New York University and co-founder of Heterodox Academy, supported the resolution that "The federal government should increase its efforts to reduce the harms caused by social media."

In his recent article for *The Atlantic*, Haidt highlighted the negative impact of social media on mental health, noting that these platforms were not originally designed for users under 18, who have become some of its most vulnerable victims. Haidt compared social media to sugarβ€”best enjoyed in moderation.
